My father spent twelve years writing this book, finishing it in 1992 at the age of 90.
He left me with the task of "publishing " his book. I told him that this might not be possible with the book in its original form, but I promised to "do something with it ".
It is partly an autobiography, including information on the origins of the Gilbrook family, and partly an account of my fathers' spiritual journey through the twentieth century and of his difficult relationship with orthodox Christianity.
I felt the book needed some editing and started to type up and edit and then to scan and edit the text, in what spare time I had, but I soon realised the enormity of the task and eventually shelved the project.
Ultimately, I decided to scan the original, unedited manuscript in its entirety and make it available on the internet (as a PDF file) -
thus, in the broadest sense, finally "publishing" the book.
The book appears exactly as Dad wrote it on his old Imperial portable typewriter.
